MW2006 BoW Nomination: Research: Birds in Backyards [http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/]

Site: Birds in Backyards
URL: http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/
Institution: Joint project between the Australian Museum and Birds Australia
Designer[s]: Australian Museum Web development Unit
Category: Research
Explanation: Birds in Backyards is a research, education and conservation program focusing on birds and the urban environment. Visitors to the site are invited to get involved by becoming a member and taking part in online surveys. They can also find out about how to create bird-friendly spaces in their own gardens and local community.

The site was launched in Sept 2005. Over 2000 people have already signed up as members to take part in the surveys and over 40,349 user sessions have recorded (these stats are for the months of Sept and Oct 2005 only).

I believe this site has become popular so quickly because it provides an opportunity for the user to contribute to real Australian Museum research - including seeing the results of their observations on the site.

MW2006 BoW Nomination: Online Exhibition: Ripples of Genocide: Journey Through Eastern Congo [http://www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/online/congojournal/

Site: Ripples of Genocide: Journey Through Eastern Congo
URL: http://www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/online/congojournal/
Institution: United States Holocaust Memeorial Museum
Designer[s]: Adele Medina O'Dowd (in-house)
Category: Online Exhibition
Explanation: Ripples of Genocide: Journey Through Eastern Congo, chronicles the devastation unfolding in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The site, includes a teachers guide to aid educators in developing lessons on the country's situation.

The site features a travel log narrated by Angelina Jolie, who visited the region in September 2003 with John Prendergast, Senior Advisor, International Crisis Group, and two photographers. Jolie, reading from her travel log, delivers commentary on the country's dire situation and details her meetings with affected populations: child soldiers, rape victims and civilian refugees. Observations are accompanied by extensive photographs of the trip and of the region. Prendergast provides historical context to the complex conflict engulfing the region.

Despite the horrors that continue to be perpetrated in the Congo, Angelina Jolie and John Prendergast returned from their trip with the overwhelming sense that "the Congolese people still hope and work for a better future." "There are solutions, but they require more international engagement. This can only happen if citizens in the U.S. and around the world tell their governments it is unacceptable to allow 1,000 Congolese to die every day."

The objective of the project is to raise awareness to the "after effects" of the Rwandan genocide in Congo and to motivate visitors to the site to action.

The main technical challenge was finding a way to bring Angelina Jolie's "journal" to life on the Internet through animation, sound, and photography. This was achieved through the creation of "online ephemera," and intimate recordings of Angelina and John Prendergast.

We were able to create the kind of unique online experience for which we were hoping. The first week of the site's life the Museum's bandwidth was inundated with traffic and comments to the Web site indicate that visitors are moved by the content.

MW2006 BoW: Illinois Alive! Early Illinois Heroes and Heroines: A

Thank you for nominating Illinois Alive! Early Illinois Heroes and
Heroines: A Multimedia Memory Montage [http://www.illinoisalive.info]
for the Online Exhibition category.

Institution: Alliance Library System
Designer[s]: Lori Bell, in-house
Explanation:
One of the major goals of this site was to make library archival
photographs accessible to the visually impaired. Most archival
collections and photographs are totally inaccessible to the visually
impaired. To create an accessible experience, staff received
training in how to write audio description for photographs. After
training, staff members wrote audio descriptions for the selected
photographs. The descriptions were put in text on the page with the
photograph and also professionally recorded as an MP3 file. This
provided several options for visually impaired - to listen to the
description with their computer's screen reader, or to listen to
human voice narration by the MP3 file. We had not seen any library
sites like this, and wanted to see what the response to this was from
the visually impaired community. We set the site up so that they
could "browse" through the collection or select photos they were
interested in from a list. One visually impaired librarian who used
the site said, "Not only does the audio description enhance my
enjoyment of the site; but it allows me to have basic access to the
site. The only descriptive narration I have been familiar with is in
regard to videos and I have enjoyed them. I have never visited a
website with described information. Although my library is doing a
digitization project, none of the software they are using is
accessible. Your site seems more accessible and modifiable. When
given a choice of the human voice for audio description or a screen
reader, I would select the human voice. "

Another goal of the project was to use multimedia to make historical
figures in the project come to life to make history more interesting
to children and young adults. Several different multimedia
strategies were used. Reenactments of several of the historical
figures was done and filmed in a movie format. For another person,
we wrote a script, created a Windows Media movie with images, and had
an actor narrate her story as the images are displayed. The other
multimedia option we tried was to create an audio ebook on the
historical figure's life using FlipBook technology. We used images
from the libraries and audio narration about the historical figure in
an online ebook format using a flipbook template with a historical
feel to it.

Even if a visually impaired individual visited a library with the
photos, these would not be accessible unless someone described the
image to the person. By offering access to these collections online,
we are not only providing access, but accessibility, and a choice of
different ways to experience the collection.

We are seeking feedback on this project and creating a model that
other libraries can use if they decide they would like to create
audio description to make their images accessible.

MW2006 BoW: Libraries Matter [http://www.librariesmatter.com]

Thank you for nominating Libraries Matter
[http://www.librariesmatter.com] for the Innovative category.

Institution: Alliance Library System
Designer[s]: Sandy Albrow
Explanation:
Alliance Library System is a multi-type regional library system
serving 250+ libraries in central Illinois. The "Libraries Matter"
campaign started as a demonstration project to help libraries in
Alliance raise funding for special projects. Participation included
libraries from all over the country and the world. The Libraries
Matter campaign offered librarians the opportunity to post specific
funding needs on the website where multiple library causes are
aggregated. "Libraries Matter" wristbands were designed for
participating libraries to sell in their communities to help raise
funds. Over 50,000 bracelets were sold by hundreds of libraries who
shared their stories on the website.

The second phase of the "Libraries Matter" campaign took place this
fall. Alliance partnered with Tumblebooks on the creation of an
audio ebook entitled "Why Libraries Matter." This book was
publicized to libraries all over the world and made free to them to
post on their websites to share the story of why libraries matter to
people of all ages. Over 1000 libraries have downloaded the book
which can be posted on their website or sent via email to a friend
or family member. Alliance is currently working with Tumblebooks on
a way for community members and organizations to sponsor an online
audio ebook for libraries to help them raise funds.

"Libraries Matter" has been a successful and innovative project to
mot only demonstrate to libraries but for them to participate in new
and exciting ways to raise funding and awareness of library services.

MW2006 BoW: Performing Medieval Narrative Today: A Video Showcase

Thank you for nominating Performing Medieval Narrative Today: A Video
Showcase [http://euterpe.bobst.nyu.edu/mednar/] for the Education
category.

Institution: French Department, New York University. Hosted, and with
assistance by the Studio for Digital Projects & Research, Bobst
Library, New York University.
Designer[s]: In house.
Explanation:
The study of the performance of medieval narrative (as opposed to the
performance of medieval plays or lyric poetry) is a relatively new
one and there are very few scholarly resources available on the
subject. There are even fewer visual examples of how narrative might
have been performed in the middle ages or how one might perform
medieval narrative today for modern audiences. This site was designed
specifically with scholars and teachers/students in mind and provides
them with free, streaming videos showing professionals and
non-professionals performing, in various settings, some of the most
famous extant medieval narratives (Dante's inferno, the Roman de la
Rose, Beowulf, etc.). The site was designed and content is selected
according to the project directors specifications: the site has to be
simple to use; the video has to be available to anyone in the world
with an internet connection and a dial-up, 56k modem; and the content
has to provide students & teachers with examples of how they might
creatively incorporate performance into the classroom. The metadata
for each clip, created by one of the project directors, is rich
(including an explanation about the work's genre, translation, etc.)
and is invaluable for students and teachers exploring this material.

Though I am the project coordinator of this project, the pedagogical
and scholarly content are wholly the creation of the French
Department faculty project directors. My role has been and continues
to be to advise on technical matters and to bring the site online. I
write in support of this project because it's the only website of its
kind; it provides its target audience with visual content available
nowhere else, either online or off; and it uses relatively
sophisticated technology (mpeg-4 video, compressed for streaming via
dial-up modem) to great advantage through a very simple interface.

I also recommend this site for a Small Budget award because the
project operates on a shoestring and the project directors are adding
content to the site as they can. The site is only partially supported
by funding for various departments at New York University, nearly all
of the work collecting/creating the content and putting it online is
done for free out of love for the project. A Small Budget award would
help to defray the costs of creating new content and entering the
metadata into the website (done by students).

category.

Institution: Me: ideasonair.
Designer[s]: ideasonair.
Explanation:
Ideasonair.net is a web project serving artists.
The site promotes artistic ideas in various
fildes, especially digital art, therefore: “Dear
artists, poets, architects, designers, critics,
curators and ‘lovers of the trade’, if you are
short of ideas, this is the site for you!”. Here,
the ideas “from hyperuranium” have landed and
found a place or better, a “virtual factory”.
Ideasonair.net will give to you a lot of
different ideas, ready to be developed.
Ideasonair, has a particular theory about ideas
and how we perceive them. In fact, think of it
like this: “ideas are ‘in the air’ and the earth
is spinning around, connecting with these ideas
at various places. So an identical idea could
‘land’ or be had in New York and Rome at the same
time”. This site could be considered somewhat
like entropy. It puts in order and takes down
ideas for you. This “online factory” will be
continually updated to give you always new ideas.
Isdeasonair, could also carry out specific
consulting for your artwork .

MW2006 BoW: The Museum of the Smiling People (all)

Thank you for nominating The Museum of the
Smiling People (all)
[http://wwwmuseedusourire.com] for the Online
Exhibition category.

Institution: The French Ministry of Culture
Designer[s]: by myself
Explanation:
Once upon a time, there was the first smile ...
in December 1995, in Paris, on a strike day. The bus number 63 was one
of the very few circulating in Paris. It went
from Trocadero to Odeon taking roughly one hour
which gave you plenty of time to read. I buried
myself into
my book "The Self Sculpture" (la Sculpture de Soi) by Michel Onfay.

Because of the traffic jam on Quai Voltaire, the bus emptied except for me
and a girl who was sitting in front of me and who was reading ìthe Joy"
(La Joie) by Georges Bernanos. "Hedonism remains
a very individualistic matter" she said to me.
There followed a short argument between us about
that statement. "Have you ever read "Babeth's feast" (Le Festin de Babeth)
by Gabriel Axel ? " This girl seemed quite nice to me.

The bus started off again but it couldnít avoid
an inevitable diversion into the Street of Saint
Pères. I was about to bid her farewell but we
insisted that we exchanged numbers. At this
point, I invited her to accompany me to the
Louvre Museum that we had just passed. Perhaps we
could go there to see if we could identify the
most beautiful smiles in the art collection.

On my own, I visited the the Louvre looking for
the smiles and taking photos with a disposable
camera. When I had them developed, it was
terrible. All the shots were bad except for one :
the statuette of Amenophis II, a small figurine
isolated behind its window at the far end of the
Egyptian Antiques Department. The pharaoh had a
broad smile, which distinguished it from the
others who were traditionally calm and ready to
cross into eternity. He was just there, smiling
and alive. He looked as if he did not belong to
Art History. I renamed him "the Louvre
reoffender". "Art is smiling at me", I thought. I
had to see right away the Mona Lisaís smile
again. How many smiles were there among the
Italian masterpieces ? I stopped in front of the
Leonardo da Vinci's attractive "Saint John the
Baptist". His smile spoke for itself. I like this
one better than the Mona Lisaís. Did you know
that the Mona Lisa, Samothrace's victory and the
toilet are the three items which are the most
visited at the Louvre ! Why have I chosen
"smiles"? Because your face smiles when there is
rejoicing and your eyes smile when there is
delight.

So why a smile museum on internet ? Because such
a museum cannot be anything but virtual like
André Malraux's museum about which Pablo Picasso
used to comment "It's a museum where the pieces
of work seem to choose you rather than us
choosing them". The smile museum presents a
challenge, that of collecting an object without
imprisoning it. Smiles cannot easily be
classified under traditional categories such as
"delighted", "sarcastic", "ironic" or any other
category.

A smile is free.

Thank you for nominating The Port Moody Station Museum Blog
[http://portmoodystationmuseum.blogspot.com] for the Innovative
category.

Institution: The Port Moody Station Museum
Designer[s]: Azra Habib, Oana Capota & Matthew Musselman
Explanation:
The Port Moody Station Museum Blog is one of the earliest museum
blogs around; it began, in its previous incarnation, in August 2004
and was refurbished for a more readable look and more professional
content in April 2005.

As a small museum, with only one permanent staff member and any
number of part-time contract workers, the blog is updated by staff
and volunteers. It gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at the
work in maintaining a small non-profit museum: fundraising events,
displays changes, maintenance work on the historic building,
cataloguing artifacts, and so on. The community, through the
blogging commenting system and email, can get involved.

While large art museums are beginning to use the blog as a museum
tool, the Port Moody Station Museum Blog shows what a small community
museum can achieve on a much more limited scale.
