Site: NYPL Digital Gallery
URL: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/index.cfm
Institution: The New York Public Library
Designer[s]: See the site's credits -- a huge team built the site while a core group was responsible for the IA, content, and functionality in league with helpful consultants.
Category: Research
Explanation: When the site launched in March 2005 I had been working on it for four years as Asst Director for Collections of the NYPL Digital Library Program. I retired last month (Oct) and now have a new job. The criteria for my nomination include the site's range and volume of content plus its ease and versatility of use. Also, it is built on strict principles of controlled vocabulary, open-source technology, and free web access.
